Not every capacitor fits neatly into the MLCC or aluminum electrolytic bucket. Specialty capacitors address niche requirements: film capacitors for AC motor-run and power-factor correction, high-voltage ceramics for X-ray and laser supplies, tantalum-polymer hybrids for low-ESR board-level filtering, and silicon capacitors for high-temperature downhole applications. Selection turns on dielectric type, voltage rating, ripple current, ESR, and temperature coefficient. Kemet, Panasonic, Vishay, TDK, and Cornell Dubilier provide the broadest selection.
