An optoisolator flashes an infrared LED across a transparent barrier to a photodetector, creating an electrically isolated signal path that costs pennies per channel. For switching power supply feedback loops, relay coil drivers, and PLC digital inputs where data rates stay under a few Mbps, the optocoupler remains the simplest, most cost-effective isolation solution. Engineers specify CTR (current transfer ratio), isolation voltage, package (DIP, SOP), and output type (transistor, triac, logic gate). Broadcom, Toshiba, onsemi, and Vishay lead the supply base.
