3750Vrms isolation in a 4-SSOP — what it buys the BOM
The VOS615A-4T is a single-channel phototransistor optocoupler from Vishay, packing 3750Vrms galvanic isolation into a compact 4-SSOP surface-mount package (4.40mm width). It provides reinforced isolation between a DC input LED and a phototransistor output, rated to handle up to 80V on the output side and 50mA continuous per channel. The current transfer ratio (CTR) is specified at 100% minimum and 200% maximum when the LED is driven at 10mA forward current — a tight bin that keeps the logic-level interface predictable across temperature and LED aging. Operating temperature spans -55°C to 110°C, covering industrial control cabinets, outdoor telecom, and engine-bay-adjacent environments where commercial-grade parts won't survive.
CTR bin and switching speed — the design decisions they drive
The 100% to 200% CTR range at 10mA forward current means the output transistor saturates reliably with as little as 10mA LED drive, and the upper limit prevents excessive base drive that would slow turn-off. For a typical 3.3V or 5V logic interface, a series resistor on the LED side gives a clean logic-level output without overdriving the phototransistor into deep saturation. Rise and fall times are 3µs and 4µs typical; turn-on and turn-off times are 5µs each. That limits practical switching to roughly 10-100 kHz — fine for isolated GPIO, PLC input modules, relay drivers, and slow data isolation, but not for high-speed comms like SPI or CAN. The 400mV Vce saturation at 50mA output keeps the voltage drop low enough to drive a 5V CMOS input without a pull-up to a higher rail.
Package and rework notes for the bench
The 4-SSOP body is small enough that hand-rework with hot air is straightforward — the 0.173" body width and 1.27mm pin pitch give good clearance for a fine tip. No exposed thermal pad, so no via-stitch requirement. Standard MSL 1 or 2 moisture sensitivity is typical for this package family — check the reel label, but it generally survives a reflow cycle without pre-bake if the bag seal is intact.
