5300Vrms isolation, 200ns switching — the 6N136-X007 in context
The Vishay 6N136-X007 is a single-channel optocoupler with a DC input and a phototransistor-with-base output, rated for 5300Vrms isolation and packaged in an 8-SMD Gull Wing for surface-mount assembly. The 200ns typical turn-on and turn-off time puts it in the high-speed phototransistor class — fast enough for digital isolation in switched-mode power supply feedback loops, motor-drive gate-drive interfaces, and industrial PLC I/O modules where a plain phototransistor coupler (10–50 µs) would limit bandwidth. The base terminal on the output side gives the designer the option to bias the phototransistor for improved speed or to connect a base-emitter resistor for noise immunity, a flexibility not offered by simpler 4-pin couplers. The 19% minimum CTR at 16 mA forward current is modest — typical for a high-speed phototransistor — and means the receiver side needs enough supply headroom (up to 15V output) and a pull-up sized to keep the logic threshold clean at the switching speed. The 8mA per-channel output current ceiling is adequate for driving a CMOS gate input or a low-power logic family directly; for higher drive or isolated gate drive, a buffer stage follows.
The ROHS3 compliance covers current EU and global RoHS requirements, so no exemption-tracking needed for the assembly line.
Package and temperature — surface-mount with wide thermal margin
The 8-SMD Gull Wing package is a standard surface-mount optocoupler footprint, compatible with reflow soldering profiles. The 5300Vrms isolation rating satisfies reinforced insulation requirements for mains-connected circuits in many IEC 60950-1 and IEC 62368-1 applications.
