What the 70 mOhm Rds(on) means for your load
The BTS462TATMA1 is a single-channel high-side power switch from Infineon's miniPROFET® family, built around a 70 mOhm typical Rds(on) N-channel MOSFET. The 5 V to 34 V load voltage range covers 12 V and 24 V industrial rails, plus the 28 V nominal in some automotive auxiliary buses. The switch is self-contained — it needs no external Vcc supply (the gate charge comes from the load rail), and the single On/Off input is non-inverting. A logic-high on the input turns the output on; a low turns it off.
Fault protection set — what it covers and what it doesn't
Three protection circuits are integrated: current limiting (fixed), over-temperature shutdown, and over-voltage clamping. The fixed current limit prevents the output from exceeding a safe level into a shorted load, while the thermal protection cycles the switch off if the die temperature exceeds the threshold. Over-voltage clamping absorbs load-dump transients on the supply rail. The Auto Restart feature means the switch attempts to re-start after a fault clears — useful for intermittent loads like lamps or motors that draw inrush. The 150°C TJ ceiling leaves headroom for self-heating from the Rds(on) loss at full load.
Package and hand-solderability
The 4-lead count means the tab is the fifth connection, so the PCB footprint must include a thermal pad with vias to the inner copper plane. Hand-soldering is feasible with a fine-tip iron and some flux; the tab can be soldered with a hot plate or reflow oven for a reliable joint.
