Fixed -5V negative rail in a D2PAK
The STMicroelectronics L7905CD2T-TR is a fixed -5V negative linear regulator delivering up to 1.5A in a D2PAK surface-mount package. It takes a negative input up to -35V and regulates it down to a clean -5V output with 60dB of ripple rejection at 120Hz — useful for audio preamp rails, op-amp negative supplies, or any bipolar supply where the negative side needs a stable local regulator. The fixed output means no external resistor divider; just input and output caps and it runs.
The 1.5A output current covers a fair amount of local load. The 3 mA quiescent current is typical for a linear regulator of this class.
This is a D2PAK (TO-263) — three leads plus a large exposed tab. The tab is the output (common for negative regulators, the tab carries the output voltage, not ground). For rework: the tab soaks heat, so preheat the board from the bottom or use a hot-air station with a wide nozzle. The tab solder joint is what carries the current and the heat; a cold joint under the tab will show up as dropout under load. Orientation is clear from the tab shape; no ambiguity.
ROHS3 compliant, so it's fine for new designs going through EU markets. The base product number is L7905, meaning this is the surface-mount D2PAK variant of the standard series.
