800 V avalanche-rugged CoolSET for 40 W offline supplies
The Infineon ICE5BR2280BZXKLA1 is a CoolSET™ fifth-generation PWM controller that integrates an 800 V avalanche-rugged CoolMOS™ MOSFET with a current-mode controller in a single PG-DIP-7 through-hole package. It delivers 40 W in a flyback or buck topology, switching at 65 kHz — a frequency that balances transformer size against EMI filter cost in enclosed adapter and auxiliary-supply designs. The 16 V start-up threshold and 10 V to 27 V Vcc range let it power up cleanly from the bulk capacitor in offline rectifier circuits, while the 75% maximum duty cycle gives the transformer reset time in continuous-conduction-mode flyback designs.
Protection suite and thermal envelope for enclosed PSUs
Built-in fault protection covers current limiting, over-load, over-temperature, over-voltage, and short-circuit — the five failure modes that dominate field returns in offline power supplies. The over-temperature protection uses the junction temperature monitor, not an external NTC, so the 150°C TJ maximum rating is the hard ceiling before the controller latches off. Soft start ramps the duty cycle at power-up, limiting the inrush current into the output capacitor bank — a practical concern when the supply powers a capacitive load like a motor drive's DC bus or a battery charger's output filter.
PG-DIP-7 board integration and compliance
The 7-lead pinout provides dedicated source, drain, Vcc, FB, and CS pins — no shared-function pins that complicate the layout. The 800 V breakdown voltage gives 200 V of margin above the 600 V bulk rail in a universal-input (85-265 VAC) flyback, covering line transients without derating.
