Gate-drive optocoupler for IGBT and MOSFET switching
The Renesas PS9506L3-AX is a single-channel optocoupler gate driver designed to drive IGBTs and power MOSFETs in industrial inverter and motor-drive applications. It provides 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between the controller-side logic and the high-voltage power stage, with a peak output current of 600mA to charge and discharge the gate capacitance of medium-power switching devices.
The 5000Vrms isolation rating provides reinforced insulation for safety in mains-connected equipment, meeting the creepage and clearance requirements for 230V/400V inverter designs. The 25kV/µs common-mode transient immunity ensures the gate driver does not false-trigger during fast switching events on the power stage — a common failure mode in SiC and GaN designs where dv/dt can exceed 20 kV/µs. This CMTI figure is a key selection parameter for noisy environments like motor drives and welding inverters.
600mA peak drive — sizing the gate charge budget
With a 600mA peak output and 400mA source/sink capability, the PS9506L3-AX can drive IGBTs with gate charge up to roughly 1 µC within a few hundred nanoseconds. The 50ns typical rise and fall times keep switching losses low. Propagation delay is 400ns max, with pulse-width distortion limited to 250ns — adequate for switching frequencies up to about 50 kHz in hard-switched topologies. For higher-current IGBT modules or faster switching, consider a driver with higher peak current, such as the PS9531L1-AX.
Package and mounting — surface-mount Gull Wing
The PS9506L3-AX is supplied in an 8-SMD Gull Wing package, with the supplier device package listed as 8-DIP Gull Wing. This is the surface-mount variant of the classic 8-pin DIP optocoupler footprint, suitable for automated assembly on double-sided PCBs. The Strip packaging indicates tube or tray delivery, not tape-and-reel — verify the packaging format with your distributor for pick-and-place compatibility.
The approvals from CSA, SEMKO, and UL cover safety certification for industrial equipment sold in North America and Europe.
