20 MHz H8S/2000 core with 128 KB flash
The DF2148RTE20IV is a 16-bit microcontroller from the H8® H8S/2100 series, built around the H8S/2000 core running at 20 MHz. It carries 128 KB of on-chip FLASH program memory and 4K x 8 of RAM — enough for a single control loop with moderate state tables, but not for data buffering beyond a few hundred bytes. The 100-TQFP package (14x14 mm body) is a fine-pitch quad flat pack that a rework station can handle with a hot-air nozzle and flux — no BGA underfill or X-ray inspection needed. The 0.5 mm pitch demands a steady hand and a decent soldering iron tip, but it's within reach of a well-equipped hobby bench.
On-chip peripherals include POR (power-on reset), PWM outputs for dimming LEDs or driving a small DC motor, and a watchdog timer (WDT) that resets the part if the firmware hangs — no external supervisor IC needed for basic robustness.
Analog and serial connectivity
Eight 10-bit ADC channels and two 8-bit DAC channels give this MCU a genuine analog front-end — useful for reading potentiometers, joystick axes, or analog temperature sensors without an external ADC chip. The serial interfaces (Host Interface, I²C, IrDA, SCI) cover most sensor and display protocols: I²C for a small OLED or IMU, SCI for a UART-to-USB bridge, and IrDA for a short-range IR link. With 74 general-purpose I/O lines, you can drive a 16x2 character LCD in 4-bit mode, scan a 6x6 keypad matrix, and still have pins left for status LEDs and a buzzer. The I/O count is generous for a 100-pin package.
