16-cell monitoring with multi-chemistry support
The ISL94216IRZ-T7 is a battery monitor IC from Renesas that handles up to 16 series-connected cells across multiple chemistries — Li-ion, Li-Po, LiFePO4, or NiMH — without needing a separate gauge for each cell type. The 16-cell count sets the maximum stack voltage the part can measure; for a typical 3.6 V nominal Li-ion cell, the stack reaches about 57.6 V, so the part fits medium-voltage packs in e-bikes, energy storage, or backup battery systems.
Interface and communication
Both I²C and SPI interfaces are available for host-side data readout and configuration — the SPI bus runs faster for bulk register reads during pack balancing or fault logging, while I²C saves pins on a space-constrained BMS controller. The dual-interface option means the same BOM can serve a high-speed production line and a low-pin-count embedded controller without a board spin.
Package and thermal path
Housed in a 64-VFQFN with exposed pad (9×9 mm), the part relies on the pad soldered to a PCB copper plane for heat sinking — the thermal resistance to ambient depends on the board layout, not the package alone. The exposed pad also provides a low-impedance ground return, which matters for the current-sense inputs that share the same reference. Tape & Reel and Cut Tape options cover both high-volume reflow and prototype runs.
Temperature range and fault protection
On-chip over-temperature protection shuts down the monitor if the die exceeds the threshold, preventing runaway in a thermal event. ROHS3 compliance confirms the part is free from the six restricted substances plus the four phthalates, clearing EU regulatory gates without an exemption.
