The ISL6298-2CR3Z from Renesas is a single-cell Li-Ion/Polymer battery charger IC in a compact 10-VFDFN exposed pad package.
The 450mA maximum charge current sets the charge rate for a 1-cell Li-Ion pack. For a typical 500 mAh cell, that works out to roughly a 0.9C rate — a full charge in about an hour and a half, assuming the input supply can deliver the current. The 4.2V battery pack voltage is the standard termination voltage for Li-Ion and Li-Polymer cells, so no special cell matching is needed. Over-temperature protection is a hard shutdown on the die temperature — it keeps the part from running away if the board is in a warm enclosure or the charge current is sustained near the limit. The programmable timer lets you set a safety timeout, which is useful if the cell is deeply discharged or damaged and never reaches the voltage threshold. The supply voltage range goes up to 6.5V, which covers USB (5V nominal) and most wall-wart inputs.
For a BOM line, this part carries no immediate obsolescence risk.
