3.3V to 25V input — what it means for the intermediate bus
The ISL62871HRUZ-T is a single-phase synchronous buck PWM controller from Renesas' Robust Ripple Regulator™ (R3) series. Its 3.3V to 25V Vcc/Vdd supply range lets it regulate a downstream rail from common intermediate buses — 5V, 12V, or 24V — without an extra bias regulator. The 300kHz fixed switching frequency is a middle-ground choice: low enough to keep MOSFET gate-drive losses moderate, high enough to shrink the output inductor to a small footprint. Synchronous rectification is built in, so the design gets the efficiency benefit of a low-side FET rather than a catch diode, which matters for thermal management in enclosed or airflow-limited systems.
Temperature grade — commercial indoor only
Rated for -10°C to 100°C ambient, this controller is aimed at commercial and indoor equipment — networking gear, industrial control panels, test instrumentation, and consumer power supplies. It does not carry the -40°C low end needed for automotive under-hood, outdoor telecom cabinets, or cold-start motor drives. If the BOM calls for extended temperature, the ISL62871HRUZ-T is not the fit without a temperature-grade variant check.
Control features for sequencing and protection
Enable, phase control, power good, and soft start are integrated. Soft start limits inrush on the output during startup. The power-good flag can drive an FPGA or MCU enable input or a downstream regulator's enable pin for rail sequencing. Phase control allows synchronizing multiple R3 controllers to reduce input ripple and EMI — useful when the design has several point-of-load rails on the same board.
Package and layout — 16-UTQFN (2.6x1.8 mm)
The 16-UTQFN package measures 2.6x1.8 mm, a very compact land pattern for a controller with this feature set. Surface-mount only. The small footprint helps on dense PCBs but puts the decoupling capacitors close to the Vcc and Vdd pins. The exposed thermal pad (the UTQFN's central pad) needs a via array to the ground plane to pull heat out of the die; without it, junction temperature rises quickly above 85°C ambient at moderate load.
Lifecycle and sourcing
Renesas lists the ISL62871HRUZ-T as Active with ROHS3 compliance. For a new design, this part carries no imminent obsolescence risk.
