RS-232 link in a 16-TSSOP footprint

It shifts data at up to 250 kbps, which covers most legacy UART links and industrial serial ports without needing a faster part.

Rated for 3V to 5.5V supply, this transceiver works on both 3.3V and 5V rails — no external level translator needed when the MCU side is 3.3V and the RS-232 bus is 5V. The 500 mV receiver hysteresis rejects noise on long cable runs better than the 200 mV typical of older MAX3221-class parts. The 16-TSSOP package keeps the PCB footprint small — 4.40 mm body width — which matters when routing multiple serial channels on a dense board.
