Asynchronous FIFO with 12 ns access and 50 MHz data rate
The Renesas 7204L12JG is a 36 Kbit (4 K x 9) asynchronous FIFO from the 7200 series, organized as 4,096 words by 9 bits. It offers a 12 ns access time and supports a 50 MHz data rate, making it suitable for buffering between asynchronous clock domains in digital systems.
Package and board-fit: 32-PLCC with J-leads
Housed in a 32-lead PLCC (J-Lead) package, the 7204L12JG occupies a 14 mm x 11.46 mm footprint (supplier device package 32-PLCC). The J-lead form factor is surface-mount but requires a through-hole solder profile — the leads bend under the body, so the package sits flush against the board with a low profile. The PLCC package is socket-compatible with standard 32-pin PLCC sockets, which is useful for prototyping or systems that require field-replaceable FIFO devices. The J-lead geometry also provides good thermal contact to the PCB pad.
Functional parametrics for the design-in decision
This is a unidirectional, asynchronous FIFO with depth and width expansion capability. It supports retransmit — the ability to reread data from the beginning without a full reset — which is useful in packet-buffering applications where a failed transmission must be replayed. The part does not support FWFT (First-Word Fall-Through) or programmable flags. The flag logic is fixed: the empty and full flags are combinatorial outputs derived from the read and write pointers, not user-configurable. This simplifies the interface but limits flexibility in systems that need custom watermark thresholds.
Lifecycle and compliance status
It is ROHS3 compliant, meeting the latest EU RoHS directive requirements for lead-free soldering processes.
