What this RTC brings to the board
The Renesas 1338-31DCGI8 is an I²C-interface real-time clock and calendar IC that tracks time in HH:MM:SS (12/24-hour) and date in YY-MM-DD-dd format, with a 56-byte NVSRAM for user data that survives power loss. Its 3.3 V to 5.5 V supply range and 5 µA timekeeping current (max) at 3.63 V to 5.5 V make it a fit for both 3.3 V and 5 V logic rails, and the 1.3 V to 3.7 V battery-backup input keeps the clock running when main power drops. The integrated square-wave output can drive a microcontroller interrupt or a simple LED heartbeat without an external oscillator buffer.
Temperature grade and environment
Rated for -40°C to 85°C operation, the 1338-31DCGI8 handles outdoor telecom cabinets, factory-floor controllers, and engine-bay data loggers where the ambient can swing well past commercial limits. The 8-SOIC package (0.154" body, 3.90 mm width) is a standard footprint for surface-mount assembly and rework, and the industrial temperature range means no derating headache when the cabinet fan fails.
Sourcing and lifecycle
No direct replacement or second-source alternate is recorded, so dual-sourcing requires a separate qualification of a functionally equivalent RTC.
