Active lifecycle and BOM-fit for a control-plane processor
The MPC8308VMAGNA: It is a single-core PowerPC e300c3 running at 400 MHz, part of the MPC83xx PowerQUICC II Pro family, aimed at cost-sensitive networking and industrial control applications where three Gigabit Ethernet ports and a DDR2 memory bus provide the I/O backbone.
Three GbE MACs and the DDR2 memory ceiling
Three 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet MACs are the main data path — enough for a three-port managed switch or a dual-WAN router with a management port, but the single USB 2.0 interface (no PHY) means external transceivers are needed for the copper or fiber side. The DDR2 memory controller limits DRAM selection to DDR2 parts; the board cannot use DDR3 without a memory controller change. Additional interfaces include DUART, HSSI, I²C, SPI, and MMC/SD/SDIO — enough for a serial console, a SPI flash boot device, and an SD card slot for firmware or logging storage.
473-ball LFBGA rework and thermal handling
Operating temperature range is 0°C to 105°C (ambient), which covers most commercial indoor equipment but not extended industrial or automotive environments. The package is surface-mount only; no socketed variant exists in this order code.
Graphics acceleration and core count
Graphics acceleration is not present — the part is a pure control-plane processor, not a multimedia SoC. The single 32-bit core is adequate for routing, firewall, or protocol-stack workloads but not for parallel packet processing at line rate on all three GbE ports simultaneously.
