The 80 MHz core clock delivers a 12.5 ns instruction cycle, which is fast enough for closed-loop motor control with PWM update rates above 20 kHz and CAN message handling at 1 Mbps without bit-banging. The 256 KB Flash holds a full CANopen or J1939 stack plus application code; the 4K x 8 EEPROM stores calibration parameters and fault logs without needing external serial memory. The 16K x 8 RAM supports moderate data buffering — enough for a few CAN message queues or a small real-time OS heap.

The MC9S12XDT256CAA comes in an 80-QFP package (14x14 mm body, 0.65 mm pitch). The 59 I/O pins are 5 V-tolerant, simplifying level translation for legacy peripherals. The external oscillator input (up to 16 MHz typically) feeds the internal PLL to generate the 80 MHz core clock.
