What this FPGA is and where it fits
The Altera EPF8820GM883B-3 is a FLEX 8000 series FPGA delivering 8000 gates and 672 logic cells in 84 LABs. It runs on a single 4.5 V supply and comes in a CPGA-192 ceramic through-hole package. The military-grade temperature range of -55°C to 125°C (TC) makes this part a fit for avionics, satellite, downhole drilling, or any sealed-environment board where commercial silicon won't survive. With 8000 gates, think glue logic, state machines, bus interfaces — not a processor core or DSP fabric. The through-hole PGA package is a legacy footprint; expect hand-assembly or socketed mounting, not reflow.
CPGA-192 through-hole — board integration note
The CPGA-192 ceramic pin-grid array is a through-hole package. That means the board needs a 192-pin PGA socket or plated through-holes. No reflow, no fine-pitch stencil. The ceramic body handles the full -55°C to 125°C range without coefficient-of-expansion mismatches that plague plastic packages in thermal cycling. Plan for socketed installation if the board sees field repair; soldering a 192-pin PGA in a depot is a rework event.
