12-bit SAR ADC in an 8-SOIC — what it does on the board
The AD7896BR-REEL7 is a 12-bit successive-approximation (SAR) ADC with a single-ended input, serial data interface, and a sample-and-hold front end — a compact signal-chain component for digitising a single analog channel at up to 100k samples per second.
Supply range and reference — what drives the fit
The ADC requires an external reference (Reference Type: External), so the accuracy of the conversion depends on the reference voltage source you supply — the part itself does not generate a bandgap reference internally. With a 1:1 S/H-to-ADC ratio, the sample-and-hold captures the input voltage on the sampling edge and holds it for the SAR conversion cycle — no pipeline delay between channels because there is only one input. The serial data interface (SPI-compatible) keeps the pin count low — only three or four wires to the host controller, which is why this part fits in an 8-pin SOIC footprint.
Package and lifecycle reality
Note that the part is RoHS non-compliant, so it contains lead in the solder finish; confirm your assembly line's exemption or waiver before committing the BOM.
