Adjustable shunt reference — 2.495 V bandgap core
The B-grade suffix guarantees ±0.5% initial tolerance — tighter than the standard ±1% or ±2% tiers, so it fits precision supplies and comparator thresholds where the reference error must stay under half a percent.
100 mA sink and 600 µA cathode minimum — load and bias math
The device sinks up to 100 mA continuous, which covers driving optocoupler LEDs, biasing error amplifiers in off-line supplies, or setting a precision voltage rail for a few op-amps. The cathode current must stay above 600 µA to keep the reference in regulation — below that the output voltage drifts. Sizing the bias resistor from the supply rail is straightforward: (Vin – Vref) / Ibias must land between 600 µA and 100 mA across all load conditions.
For new designs, a current-production TL431 variant in the same 8-TSSOP package (e.g. TL431BIDBZR, TL431BQDBZR) should be evaluated for pin compatibility and tolerance grade.
