16-bit bus transceiver for 5 V backplanes – 32 mA / 64 mA drive
It packs two 8-bit elements with independent direction and output-enable controls, each element sourcing 32 mA and sinking 64 mA – enough drive for heavily loaded backplanes, memory arrays, or multi-drop control buses without external line drivers. The 3-state outputs let multiple transceivers share the same data lines, making it a standard building block in telecom line cards, industrial PLC backplanes, and ATCA-style chassis where 5 V logic still rules.
5 V supply only – not 3.3 V tolerant
A common mistake is assuming a 5 V logic part can be under-run at 3.3 V; the SN74ABTH16245DL will not operate below 4.5 V. The 74ABTH's BiCMOS output stage gives it an edge in speed and drive over pure CMOS 5 V transceivers, but that advantage only matters if you still have a 5 V rail.
ROHS3 compliance means no lead, no conflict minerals paperwork issues for EU or California markets.
TI still manufactures the 74ABTH series, and the 48-SSOP package is a standard, widely available format. That said, if your procurement team is consolidating to 3.3 V logic, the 74LVTH16245A is a pin-compatible drop-in with a different supply rail.
