Quad 2-input XOR in a through-hole DIP
The Texas Instruments SN74AC86N is a quad 2-input XOR gate from the 74AC logic family, packaged in a 14-pin through-hole DIP (14-DIP, 0.300" body width). It performs the exclusive-OR function on each of its four independent gates, with both active-high inputs per gate. The 74AC series offers a balance of speed and drive — 8.5 ns propagation delay at 5 V, 50 pF load — while operating across a 2 V to 6 V supply range. This makes it a direct drop-in for 5 V TTL or CMOS logic systems that need a moderate-speed XOR for parity generation, data comparison, or controlled inversion in industrial control, telecom, and instrumentation boards.
Supply voltage and logic compatibility
Rated for 2 V to 6 V supply, the SN74AC86N accepts input logic-low levels of 0.9 V to 1.65 V and logic-high levels of 2.1 V to 3.85 V over the full operating range. At 5 V nominal, it is fully compatible with 5 V TTL and CMOS logic families (74HC, 74HCT, 74ACT) without level translation. The 2 µA maximum quiescent current keeps the power budget minimal in always-on or battery-backed sections of a mixed-voltage board.
Output drive and temperature range
Each output can source or sink 24 mA, enough to drive standard logic inputs on a backplane or a small LED indicator through a series resistor. The industrial temperature range of -40°C to 85°C covers most factory-floor, outdoor telecom cabinet, and HVAC controller environments. The through-hole 14-DIP package suits prototyping, breadboarding, and through-hole-only assembly lines where surface-mount reflow is not available.
Lifecycle and sourcing
Texas Instruments lists the SN74AC86N as an active product with ROHS3 compliance. No last-time-buy or end-of-life notice is in effect.
