Open-collector buffer for level shifting and high-current loads
The Texas Instruments SN7417DR is a 7400-series hex buffer with open-collector outputs, each rated to sink 40 mA. It takes a non-inverting logic input and drives an open-collector transistor to ground, meaning the output can pull a load to a voltage higher than the 5 V supply rail — useful for driving relays, LEDs, or translating 5 V logic to 12 V or 24 V industrial signals. The six buffers are independent, each handling one bit, in a compact 14-SOIC package for surface-mount assembly.
40 mA sink per channel — what it buys you
The high-level output current is listed as a dash (no sourcing capability) — this part only pulls low, so the load must connect between the output pin and a positive supply. That positive supply can be anything within the transistor breakdown voltage, typically up to 30 V for this family, though the datasheet should be checked for the exact maximum.
If the board sees -40°C or +85°C, a 74HCT or 74LVC variant with a wider temperature range would be needed.
