Six inverters in a 16-SOIC — the 4000B workhorse for mixed-voltage and harsh-environment logic
The Texas Instruments CD4009UBMT is a 4000B-series CMOS hex inverter IC, packing six independent inverter gates into a 16-SOIC surface-mount package. Each gate accepts a single input and delivers the inverted output, with the supply spanning 3V to 18V — a range that lets it bridge 5V and 12V logic domains or run directly off an unregulated battery rail.
The 3V to 18V supply range lets this part operate on a 12V industrial bus, a 9V battery, or a regulated 5V supply without a level translator. At 15V with a 50pF load the propagation delay is 60ns. Output drive is asymmetric: 1.5mA source, 24mA sink. That means the CD4009UBMT can pull a load low much harder than it can pull it high. If you are driving a LED indicator or a relay coil, wire the load between the output and VDD so the gate sinks current. Driving a CMOS input on another gate is fine either way — the input capacitance is negligible. The quiescent current maxes at 4µA across temperature, so the part barely loads the supply when idle.
Temperature grade and package — deployment context
This is not a commercial or even industrial part; it is rated for the same temperature extremes as a JAN-class logic device, though without the formal MIL-STD screening. Typical deployment scenarios include engine control units (ECU) on heavy equipment, satellite power management, military radio interface logic, and downhole sensor tools where the ambient hits 125°C.
The 4000B series is a mature CMOS logic family — TI has no announced end-of-life for this specific order code, but the family is not a growth category. Independent distribution carries sealed factory reels and cut tape from production overruns and inventory balancing.
