What this 74F08SCX is — and what it isn't
The Fairchild 74F08SCX is a quad 2-input AND gate from the 74F fast-logic family, packaged in a 14-SOIC (3.90 mm width) for surface-mount assembly. It runs on a 4.5V to 5.5V supply and delivers a propagation delay of 5.6 ns at 5V with a 50 pF load — that's the speed advantage over the 74HC08 or 74LS08, which typically sit in the 7–10 ns range. Four independent AND gates per package, each with two inputs, and the output can source 1 mA or sink 20 mA. This is a 5V-only part; don't feed it 3.3V and expect clean logic levels.
The headline 5.6 ns propagation delay at 5V, 50 pF means this gate can keep up with fast clock trees, address decoding, or control signal cleanup in systems running above 50 MHz. If your board has a 74HC08 that's marginal on hold times, swapping in the 74F08SCX buys you about 4 ns of margin. The quiescent current maxes at 12.9 mA — higher than CMOS logic, but that's the trade-off for speed in a bipolar process.
RoHS non-compliant — plan around it
The 74F08SCX is marked RoHS non-compliant. If your assembly line runs lead-free reflow profiles and requires RoHS certification, this part won't pass incoming inspection without an exemption. For legacy repairs or military/aerospace builds where leaded solder is still allowed, it's fine.
Temperature range — commercial only
No industrial or automotive environment — if the board sees -20°C or +85°C ambient, look at the 54F or 74F with extended temp suffix. The input logic thresholds are 0.8V low and 2V high, standard TTL-compatible levels.
