The STMicroelectronics VL6180V1NR/1 is an active-production FlightSense™ time-of-flight sensor, meaning it is available for both new design-ins and existing BOM positions without lifecycle risk. Rated for sensing distances from 0 to 62 cm, the VL6180V1NR/1 measures range by timing the reflection of its emitted IR light — the I²C output delivers the distance value directly to the host MCU without external ADC or signal conditioning.

The 62 cm maximum sensing distance is the absolute limit for the time-of-flight measurement; in practice, the usable range depends on target reflectivity and ambient light, but the sensor reliably detects objects within this envelope. Operating from a 2.6 V to 3 V supply, the VL6180V1NR/1 runs directly off a 2.8 V or 3.0 V rail common in battery-powered and portable designs — no additional regulator is needed if the system rail is within this window. The -10°C to 60°C operating temperature range suits indoor consumer, commercial, and light-industrial environments — not rated for automotive or extended outdoor exposure.
