What the 200 cm range means for your design
The VL53L0CXV0DH/1 is a time-of-flight (ToF) laser-ranging sensor from ST's FlightSense™ family, measuring distance up to 200 cm via a VCSEL emitter and single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array. Unlike IR triangulation or ultrasonic sensors, ToF gives you a direct distance reading — not just a presence flag — over the full 200 cm span, with millimeter resolution in the near field. That 200 cm maximum is the outdoor/ambient-light ceiling. Indoors or in controlled lighting, the practical ranging limit is closer to the datasheet's typical 120–150 cm for a white target at 70% reflectance. The sensor's I²C interface means you read the distance as a 16-bit value over the bus — no ADC or comparator needed on your MCU.
Temperature range and deployment context
It does not extend to automotive cabin or outdoor enclosure without active thermal management; the SPAD array's dark-count rate rises with temperature, reducing the effective ranging distance at the high end.
Package and reflow fit
Supplied in Tape & Reel (TR) with Cut Tape (CT) option, the VL53L0CXV0DH/1 is a surface-mount optical module with an integrated VCSEL and SPAD in a single package. The reflow profile follows ST's standard lead-free soldering guidelines — peak temperature 260°C, 30 seconds above 255°C. The module's optical window must stay free of flux residue; a no-clean flux or a post-reflow cleaning step that avoids solvent pooling on the window is recommended.
