400 V / 8 A switching transistor in a TO-220
The STMicroelectronics ST13007 is an NPN bipolar power transistor rated for 400 V collector-emitter breakdown and 8 A continuous collector current, in a TO-220-3 through-hole package. It dissipates up to 80 W, making it a fit for medium-power switched-mode circuits such as flyback converters, off-line power supplies, and motor drive stages where the TO-220 leadform allows direct heatsink mounting.
Vce saturation and base drive — the real design constraint
Vce saturation is specified at 3 V maximum with 2 A base current driving 8 A collector current. That is a forced beta of 4, consistent with a power switch run into hard saturation. The DC current gain (hFE) minimum of 5 at 5 A and 5 Vce means the base drive must supply roughly 1 A to get 5 A collector current — a Darlington or a dedicated driver stage is the usual call. Off-state leakage is 10 µA maximum, tight enough for a 400 V rail without excessive standby loss.
