8V rail regulation for industrial and automotive boards
The STMicroelectronics L7808ABD2T-TR is a fixed 8V output LDO regulator delivering up to 1.5A continuous current in the D2PAK surface-mount package. It belongs to the L78 series, a workhorse linear regulator family used to generate clean, regulated rails from unregulated or higher-voltage supplies. With a maximum input voltage of 35V and a dropout voltage of 2V max at 1A load, the input rail must stay at least 2V above 8V to maintain regulation. That means a minimum input of 10V at full current, which a standard 12V or 24V industrial supply handles comfortably. The 62dB PSRR at 120Hz tells you how well this regulator rejects the 100/120Hz ripple from a rectified mains supply. For a 12V rail with 1V peak-to-peak ripple, the output ripple drops to roughly 0.8mV — clean enough for most analog and digital loads without post-filtering.
Temperature range and protection for harsh environments
The 125°C junction limit gives headroom for self-heating at 1.5A output. Built-in over-temperature and short-circuit protection let the regulator survive a sustained output short or a thermal overload without latching off or failing. The thermal shutdown kicks in around 150°C junction, cycling the output until the die cools. Without a thermal via array under the tab, the junction temperature at 1.5A output with 12V input (4V drop, 6W dissipation) will exceed the 125°C limit in still air.
The tape-and-reel packaging (L7808ABD2T-TR suffix) is intended for automated pick-and-place assembly. The cut-tape variant is also listed for prototype or low-volume builds.
