Fast recovery diode for 200 V rails — 35 ns trr in a D2PAK
It comes in a surface-mount D2PAK (TO-263) package, the two-lead-plus-tab variant that bolts the die's cathode to the tab for thermal transfer through the PCB pad. This class of diode is used in switch-mode power supply output stages, freewheeling clamps across inductive loads, and boost or flyback rectification where the recovery speed directly determines switching loss and EMI.
35 ns recovery — what it buys the power stage
The 35 ns trr at 8 A forward current puts this diode in the fast-recovery class for 200 V bus applications. In a continuous-conduction-mode PFC or a 100 kHz forward converter, that recovery charge is low enough that the MOSFET turn-on loss stays manageable without a snubber. The forward voltage drop is 1.15 V at 10 A, which is typical for a 200 V fast epitaxial die — the tradeoff is a slightly higher Vf than an ultrafast or SiC Schottky, but the trr is still clean enough for the 50–150 kHz range most offline supplies run.
Obsolete — sourcing through the independent channel
The BYW29G-200-TR carries an official obsolete product status. ST has ended production of this device, so new stock is no longer available through the franchised channel. The remaining supply sits in independent distribution — excess inventory from overruns, decommissioned builds, or distributor stock that never sold through. For a BOM line that still calls out this order code, the procurement path is surplus or broker-sourced material; there is no factory LTB window to chase.
D2PAK — board-level thermal and mounting
The D2PAK (TO-263) footprint uses the tab as the cathode connection and the primary heat path. This is a standard surface-mount power package — reflow profile follows the usual 260 °C peak for lead-free solder, and the part is MSL 1, no bake required before assembly as long as the moisture barrier bag is intact.
