Gate drive and load sizing for AC switching
The BTA08-600TWRG is an 8 A RMS, 600 V off-state TRIAC in a TO-220 package, with a Logic - Sensitive Gate that triggers at 5 mA max. That 5 mA gate trigger current means a standard microcontroller GPIO driving through a series resistor can fire it directly — no separate driver transistor needed for most logic-level outputs. The 10 mA holding current ensures the device latches on through the zero-crossing of a 50/60 Hz AC waveform without dropout as long as the load current stays above that threshold. Rated 8 A RMS continuous, the TRIAC handles resistive loads like heaters and incandescent lamps up to that current, and derated inductive loads such as small motors or solenoids. The 80 A / 84 A non-repetitive surge rating (Itsm at 50/60 Hz) covers the inrush from a cold filament or a motor start — budget this into the fuse or breaker selection so the TRIAC survives the surge without the protection clearing.
Package thermal path and mounting
Housed in a TO-220-3 (TO-220) through-hole package, the BTA08-600TWRG's metal tab is the collector/MT2 terminal — it must be electrically isolated from the heatsink unless the heatsink is at the same potential.
