400 V / 6 A standard TRIAC in TO-220
The STMicroelectronics BTA06-400CRG is a standard TRIAC rated for 400 V off-state voltage and 6 A RMS on-state current, housed in a TO-220-3 through-hole package. It is a single-configuration device intended for AC load switching in industrial and appliance applications — motor speed controls, heater drives, lighting dimmers, and solid-state relays where the load stays within the 6 A continuous envelope.
Gate drive and trigger thresholds
The gate trigger current (Igt) is 25 mA maximum, with a gate trigger voltage (Vgt) of 1.3 V maximum. That 25 mA Igt is the number to size the drive circuit around — an MCU GPIO driving a transistor or an optocoupler output needs to source at least that much current into the gate to guarantee turn-on across temperature. The holding current (Ih) is also 25 mA maximum, meaning the load current must stay above that level to keep the TRIAC latched once triggered; below that, the device drops out at zero-cross. For low-current loads like a small fan or a relay coil, verify the load current exceeds Ih or add a dummy load.
Surge handling and thermal budget
Non-repetitive surge current (Itsm) is rated at 60 A for 50 Hz and 63 A for 60 Hz — this is the single-cycle peak the die can survive during a fault or inrush event like a lamp cold-start or motor start. The 6 A RMS on-state rating is the continuous conduction limit; for a 6 A resistive load at 230 V AC, expect junction rise that requires a heatsink.
