Ethernet PHY with RMII – what it is and where it fits
The VSC8530XMW-05 is a single-circuit Ethernet PHY from Microchip, designed for systems that communicate over RMII (Reduced Media-Independent Interface) to the MAC layer. Its function is Ethernet, and the RMII interface cuts the pin count compared to a full MII, which simplifies routing on cost-sensitive two-layer boards. The 48-VFQFN exposed-pad package measures 6x6 mm and requires a thermal via pattern under the pad to pull heat into the ground plane. The exposed paddle also serves as the primary ground return for the PHY.
Sourcing and lifecycle – active production, no obsolescence risk
Microchip lists the VSC8530XMW-05 as Active with ROHS3 compliance. Sourced per RFQ against your target quantity. The tray package is the standard delivery format for this QFN. If your pick-and-place line prefers tape-and-reel, confirm availability with your quote request — the tray is the listed option.
Design-in checklist – supply, layout, and thermal
Surface-mount on a 48-VFQFN exposed-pad package — the PCB land pattern should follow the supplier's recommended footprint to avoid solder bridging. The exposed pad must be soldered to the board. The single-circuit PHY handles one Ethernet link. For multi-port designs, each port needs its own VSC8530XMW-05 or a multi-PHY device from the same family.
