120V input ceiling defines the application space
The MIC5280YME is a high-voltage linear regulator from Microchip Technology that accepts up to 120V on the input pin. This input range covers industrial bus rails (48V, 72V, 96V) and automotive load-dump transients without an external pre-regulator — the internal pass element takes the voltage stress directly. Output is adjustable from a 1.22V reference up to 5V, set by an external resistor divider. The single regulator delivers 25mA continuous, suited for powering sensor front-ends, isolated bias supplies, or microcontroller core rails in a high-voltage environment.
PSRR and quiescent — the noise and idle trade-offs
PSRR is 80dB at 1kHz, meaning the regulator attenuates 100mV of input ripple at that frequency down to 10µV at the output. For an audio codec or precision ADC powered from a noisy 48V rail, that rejection saves a post-filter LC stage. Quiescent current is 50µA typical, rising to 400µA max supply current. The 50µA Iq suits always-on blocks in battery-backed or standby circuits where the regulator's own draw must stay below the load's sleep current.
Thermal and package — the exposed pad is load-bearing
Housed in an 8-SOIC with exposed pad (8-SOIC-EP), the MIC5280YME relies on the pad soldered to a board copper plane for thermal dissipation. At 120V input and 25mA output, the dropout voltage of 1.5V max at full load means the die dissipates about 3W worst-case — the exposed pad and PCB layout must handle that heat, not the package leads. The Enable pin allows external sequencing or shutdown; protection features include over-current and over-temperature shutdown, so the regulator survives a sustained output short or thermal runaway event.
