2.5 A adjustable LDO — the dropout headroom matters
The MIC37252WR is a single-output positive adjustable LDO regulator from Microchip Technology, delivering up to 2.5 A continuous output current. The output voltage is set via external resistors from a 1.24 V reference up to 5.5 V maximum, with a maximum input of 6 V. The critical number for design-in is the dropout voltage: 1 V maximum at 2.5 A. For a 3.3 V output, the input needs at least 4.3 V under worst-case load.
Protection set and temperature grade
Built-in protection covers over-current, over-temperature, and reverse polarity — the reverse polarity clamp is a practical safeguard for battery-powered or hot-swap rails where the input can be momentarily reversed. The Enable pin lets a GPIO or supervisor hold the output off during power-up sequencing.
S-PAK-5 package — thermal and layout notes
The S-PAK-5 (SPak-5, 5 leads plus tab) is a surface-mount power package. Without adequate copper area, the 1 V dropout at full load produces 2.5 W of dissipation, which will push the die past the rated limit in still air. The tab is also the ground connection for the output — the layout should tie the tab to the ground plane with multiple vias under the package. The tube packaging means the part ships in a rigid anti-static tube; no reel or tape for automated pick-and-place without a tube feeder.
