Wide-input buck controller for 5V to 24V rails
The MIC2182YSM-TR is a step-down (buck) switching controller from Microchip that drives external N-channel MOSFETs. Its 4.5V to 32V supply range covers 5V, 12V, and 24V industrial buses without an extra pre-regulator — one less inductor and one less capacitor on the BOM. Switching frequency is fixed at 300 kHz, a standard industrial frequency that keeps inductor values in the 10 µH to 47 µH range for most output currents. The 86% maximum duty cycle limits the dropout headroom: a 5V output needs at least 5.8V input, so this part is not a low-dropout regulator. Synchronous rectification is built in — the controller drives a second external N-channel MOSFET on the low side, improving efficiency at output voltages below 5V. The BOM includes two FETs and their gate-drive resistors, not one.
Temperature range and package — what fits where
It does not carry an AEC-Q100 automotive grade, so it is not qualified for under-hood or chassis-mounted automotive applications. The 16-SSOP package (5.30 mm body width, 0.209-inch pitch) is a standard surface-mount footprint. The supplier device package is 16-SSOP — the same as the case code. No special reflow profile beyond the standard JEDEC MSL level for SSOP packages.
Control features for sequencing and inrush
An Enable pin lets the designer sequence this rail after another supply comes up — useful in multi-rail systems where the core voltage must stabilise before the I/O rail. The Soft Start pin sets the ramp time with an external capacitor, limiting inrush current into the output capacitor bank. Clock Sync is available — an external clock can synchronise the 300 kHz oscillator to a system clock, reducing beat-frequency noise in sensitive analog or RF sections.
