Sensor accuracy and bus interface
The MCP9808T-E/MC is a digital local temperature sensor from Microchip that reports temperature over an I²C/SMBus interface with 12-bit resolution. Its highest accuracy is ±0.5°C across the -20°C to 100°C range, widening to ±1°C over the full -40°C to 125°C operating band. This accuracy class is typical for thermal management in industrial controllers, server racks, and battery packs where a 0.5°C window matters for fan-speed or charge-cutoff decisions.
The sensor operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply, which means it can run directly off a 3.3V or 5V rail without an extra regulator.
Programmable features and shutdown mode
The MCP9808 includes an output switch, programmable temperature limits, and programmable resolution (12-bit default). Shutdown mode drops the supply current to under 1 µA, useful for battery-powered loggers that wake the sensor on a schedule. The programmable limit can drive an alert pin directly, offloading the host MCU from polling.
The 0.50 mm pitch DFN footprint is layout-friendly for two-layer boards.
