Temperature error budget for a hot enclosure
The MCP9808-E/MS is a digital local temperature sensor from Microchip Technology that reports the die temperature over an I²C/SMBus interface. Its headline accuracy is ±0.5°C typical across the -20°C to 100°C range, widening to ±1°C at the extremes of -40°C to 125°C. For a thermal-management loop in a motor drive or power supply enclosure, that error budget is tight enough to trigger a fan or throttle a processor without false trips. Resolution is 12 bits. The sensor integrates an output switch with programmable limit and shutdown mode, so it can assert an interrupt or shut down a load without the host MCU polling the bus.
Supply voltage and bus compatibility
Supply range is 2.7 V to 5.5 V, covering both 3.3 V and 5 V logic rails. SMBus timeout and alert response are supported, which matters if the bus is shared with other SMBus devices that expect time-limited transactions.
