Product details

Quad comparator for battery-powered threshold detection

The MCP6544-E/P from Microchip Technology is a quad general-purpose comparator in a 14-DIP through-hole package. The 8 µs max propagation delay sets the ceiling for edge detection — a window comparator monitoring a 10 kHz sensor signal has 80 µs per period, so the comparator delay consumes 10 % of the cycle budget and the rest goes to the controller interrupt latency.

Input bias and offset — the sensor front-end fit

With 6.5 mV hysteresis built in, the comparator resists chatter on slow-moving analog signals — a thermistor bridge or photodiode amplifier output crossing the threshold will trigger cleanly without external positive feedback. The 70 dB CMRR and 80 dB PSRR mean common-mode noise on the input pair or ripple on the supply rail couples in at roughly 300 µV per volt — fine for a 10 mV threshold but worth derating if the threshold sits below 5 mV.

Output drive and logic interface

Four comparators in one 14-DIP package saves board space and reduces per-channel cost compared to four single-channel comparators, though the common supply and ground pins mean all four channels share the same voltage reference.

Temperature grade and operating envelope

The 14-DIP package with 0.300-inch row spacing fits standard breadboards, prototyping sockets, and through-hole PCB layouts — no reflow profile needed, suitable for hand-assembly or low-volume production.
