What the 0.4 V dropout and 1 A rating mean for your rail
The MCP1826S-2502E/EB is a single-output positive LDO regulator delivering a fixed 2.5 V at up to 1 A, with a maximum dropout voltage of 0.4 V at full load. That means the input rail can dip to 2.9 V and the output still holds regulation — useful when a 3.3 V bus sags under load or a lithium cell drops below 3.0 V. The 60 dB PSRR at 100 Hz tells you this regulator attenuates 100 Hz ripple — the fundamental from a full-wave rectified mains supply — by a factor of 1000. If your downstream ADC or sensor front-end is sensitive to line-frequency hum, this LDO cleans it up without a post-filter. Quiescent current is 220 µA — not the lowest in class, but low enough for always-on rails in battery-powered equipment where the load current is in the hundreds of milliamps. For sub-milliamp sleep states, you would need a separate shutdown mechanism; this part lacks an enable pin.
Package, thermal, and board-fit
The TO-263-4 (D²Pak) package has an exposed metal tab on the bottom — the 3-DDPAK supplier device package. Without a proper thermal pad, the regulator will hit thermal shutdown long before the current limit. The input voltage range goes up to 6 V max, so it suits 3.3 V, 5 V, or single-cell Li-ion rails. The undervoltage lockout (UVLO) prevents the output from turning on until the input is high enough to maintain regulation — no partial-power glitches on startup.
Protection features and operating environment
Built-in over-temperature and short-circuit protection mean the regulator survives an output short indefinitely — it folds back current and shuts down when the die exceeds the thermal limit, then auto-recovers when it cools. No external crowbar or current-limit resistor needed.
