25K logic elements and a Cortex-M3 on one die
The M2S025-VFG400I is a SmartFusion®2 SoC FPGA from Microchip, combining an ARM® Cortex®-M3 processor running at 166 MHz with 25K logic elements in a single 400-ball VFBGA package. This is the mid-density member of the family — enough fabric for a modest peripheral controller or a few DSP accelerators, but the real win is the hard MCU subsystem that boots instantly without an external configuration memory.
207 I/O in a 400-ball BGA — layout realities
The 400 VFBGA (0.80 mm pitch) breaks out 207 user I/O. That is enough for a parallel bus to an external ADC or display, plus a handful of serial interfaces. The 0.80 mm pitch is forgiving for a 4-layer board — you can fan out the outer two rows on the top layer and escape the inner rows with a single via-in-pad.
256 KB eSRAM — enough for a real-time control loop
The Cortex-M3 has 256 KB of embedded SRAM (eSRAM) on the bus matrix — no wait states, no external memory needed for most control or protocol-stack workloads. That is double the 128 KB on the M2S005 sibling, so if your firmware is pushing past 100 KB for the application code plus the RTOS, this is the tier to pick. The FPGA fabric has its own distributed RAM blocks, but the eSRAM is the MCU's private, deterministic memory.
Microchip lists the M2S025-VFG400I as Active. That means no last-time-buy window looming, no PCN for discontinuation on the horizon. The SmartFusion2 family has been in volume production for several years, so the process and supply chain are mature.
Connectivity and high-speed peripherals
The FPGA fabric also has dedicated SERDES lanes and a PCIe hard IP block, so this part can serve as a bridge between a backplane and a sensor array.
