86 184 logic elements — what that buys you

The 86184 logic elements (LEs) put this part in the mid-density tier of the IGLOO2 family. Enough fabric for a 32-bit soft-core processor plus a custom DSP chain, or a moderate-size state machine with several high-speed counters. The 2.65 Mbit of on-chip SRAM buffers data between processing stages without external memory for most control-loop applications.

180 I/O in a 324-ball BGA — layout reality

180 user I/O in a 324-ball BGA (0.80 mm pitch, 17 mm body). That is a dense breakout — expect a 6- or 8-layer PCB to fan out the inner balls. The 1.14 V core supply is low enough to keep dynamic power under 1 W for most designs, but the 180 I/O banks need separate 3.3 V or 2.5 V rails per bank. Plan for at least two decoupling capacitors per supply ball group.

That covers outdoor telecom cabinets, factory-floor motor drives, and engine-bay electronics.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IGLOO2 and IGLOO?

IGLOO2 is the second-generation non-volatile FPGA family from Microchip, adding 5Gbps SERDES blocks, a DDR3 memory controller, and an embedded ARM Cortex-M3 hard processor — features absent in the original IGLOO series. The M2GL090 is an IGLOO2 device.
