2 Mbit I²C EEPROM — what the specs mean for the BOM
The Microchip AT24CM02-SSHD-B is a 2 Mbit serial EEPROM organized as 256K x 8 bits, accessed over an I²C interface running up to 1 MHz.
I²C bus at 1 MHz — timing margin on a loaded bus
The 1 MHz clock frequency matches the Fast-mode Plus (Fm+) I²C standard. With a 450 ns access time, the part keeps up with back-to-back reads on a bus that may also carry an RTC, temperature sensor, or port expander. If your bus capacitance exceeds 100 pF, factor in the rise-time degradation — the 1 MHz rate is achievable but needs careful trace routing and pull-up sizing.
8-SOIC package — footprint and handling
The tube shipment is what the B suffix signals — Microchip ships this variant in tubes, not tape-and-reel. If your pick-and-place line expects reels, confirm the reeled equivalent (AT24CM02-SSHD-T) before the line stops. The package is standard SOIC-8; no thermal pad, no exposed paddle — just route the supply decoupling close to pins 4 (GND) and 8 (VCC).
Not rated for 105°C or 125°C extended industrial or under-hood automotive; if your ambient is above 85°C, you need the AT24CM02-SSH*-T variant with a different temperature suffix. The non-volatile retention is specified for 100 years and 1 million write cycles per page, standard for Microchip's serial EEPROM process.
