8Kbit I²C EEPROM in a field-swappable DIP-8
The Microchip AT24C08D-PUM is an 8Kbit serial EEPROM organized as 1K x 8 bits, communicating over an I²C bus at up to 1 MHz. The through-hole 8-DIP package (0.300" body) is socket-friendly — you can swap it on site with just a chip puller, no hot-air station needed. This is the part you want in your field kit for legacy board repairs or prototyping on a breadboard.
The 1 MHz clock rate (Fast-mode Plus compatible) lets you read or write the full 8Kbit array in under 10 ms if the bus is free. The 5 ms write cycle (word or page) is the time the part is busy after a write command; your firmware needs to poll for the ACK polling or insert a 5 ms delay before the next write. For applications that log data every few seconds, that's fine. For high-frequency writes, you'll want to buffer writes into page-sized chunks.
Rated for 1.7V to 3.6V, this EEPROM works with 1.8V MCUs (common in battery gear) and 3.3V systems without a level shifter. If your board lives in a heated office, the commercial-grade sibling would also work, but this one gives you margin for the cold start.
