What this photovoltaic isolator does
The Infineon PVI1050NPBF is a two-channel photovoltaic-output optocoupler in an 8-DIP through-hole package. It converts a DC input signal into a photovoltaic voltage across an internal isolation barrier rated at 2500Vrms. The output side delivers up to 5V open-circuit and 5µA per channel — enough to directly drive the gate of a power MOSFET or IGBT without an external bias supply, making it a common choice for isolated gate-drive circuits in motor drives, inverters, and industrial power supplies.
The 5µA per-channel output current is the key constraint. It's not a general-purpose relay driver or a logic-level output — it's sized for high-impedance loads like MOSFET gates, where the photovoltaic voltage charges the gate capacitance and the leakage is negligible. The 300µs typical turn-on and 220µs turn-off times reflect the time needed to charge and discharge that capacitance through the internal photodiode stack. If you need to drive a low-impedance load or switch faster than a few hundred hertz, this isn't the part.
Industrial temperature and isolation rating
The 2500Vrms isolation is a basic safety barrier — sufficient for motor-drive phase-to-ground isolation and general-purpose galvanic isolation in equipment that doesn't require reinforced insulation.
