650 V, 42 A TrenchStop IGBT in TO-220-3
The Infineon IKP20N65H5XKSA1 is a TrenchStop™ series IGBT rated for 650 V collector-emitter breakdown and 42 A continuous collector current, with a pulsed capability of 60 A. Housed in a PG-TO220-3 through-hole package, it targets power conversion stages where switching losses and thermal budget are the binding constraints. The 48 nC gate charge keeps the drive stage simple — a standard 15 V gate drive with a 32 Ω resistor handles the 170 µJ turn-on and 60 µJ turn-off energy under the 400 V, 10 A test condition. Junction temperature spans -40 °C to 175 °C, so it lives comfortably in motor drives, UPS systems, and industrial power supplies where the ambient inside the cabinet runs hot.
Package and mounting
Through-hole TO-220-3, supplier package PG-TO220-3. The tab is the collector. Mounting torque on the M3 screw should follow the datasheet recommendation — overtightening cracks the plastic body. Thermal interface material between the tab and the heatsink is expected; the 125 W power dissipation assumes a properly greased or pad-insulated joint.
Lifecycle and compliance
RoHS3 compliant, so it clears the material declaration for EU markets without an exemption hunt. The TrenchStop series is Infineon's established IGBT platform; no imminent PCN expected, but as with any active semiconductor, check the latest Infineon PCN page before a large BOM freeze.
