What this optocoupler does and who needs it
The VOL628AT is a Vishay optocoupler with a phototransistor output and an input stage that accepts both AC and DC signals. That AC input capability is the differentiator here — it lets you sense line voltage polarity or zero-cross directly without an external bridge rectifier, which saves board space and BOM cost. Isolation is rated at 5000Vrms, making it suitable for safety-barrier applications in industrial power supplies, motor drives, and PLC digital inputs where reinforced insulation is required.
Current transfer ratio is specified from 50% minimum to 600% maximum at a forward current of 1 mA. That wide spread means the same part can vary the output collector current by over a decade — design the input resistor for the minimum CTR to guarantee the output saturates, then verify the maximum does not exceed the 50 mA output current rating at your worst-case supply. Typical turn-on time is 6 µs and turn-off is 5.5 µs, with rise/fall of 3.5 µs and 5 µs respectively. That is fast enough for 10–50 kHz switching or data transmission, but not for high-speed isolated communication — keep it below 100 kHz for reliable edge detection.
Package, mounting, and sourcing posture
Surface-mount assembly with gull-wing leads is straightforward for standard reflow profiles.
