The VOL617A-1T is a single-channel optocoupler with a phototransistor output and DC input. Its isolation rating is 5000Vrms.
CTR range at 5mA — sizing the drive margin
The current transfer ratio (CTR) is specified at 40% minimum and 80% maximum, both measured at a forward current of 5mA. That means with 5mA through the LED side, the phototransistor can sink between 2mA and 4mA on the output — enough headroom to guarantee a solid logic low into a 5V CMOS or TTL input. The 40% floor is the number to design around for worst-case drive; if your load needs more than 2mA at the output, you either increase the LED current (up to the 60mA absolute max) or pick a higher-CTR bin. The tight 40-80% spread also helps keep the on-state voltage consistent across reels, which matters for analog-level sensing or current-loop interfaces.
Switching speed and temperature range
Rise and fall times are 3.5µs and 5µs typical, with turn-on and turn-off times of 6µs and 5.5µs.
This removes the obsolescence risk that often plagues older optocouplers.
