Field-swappable isolation for mains-tied boards
The Vishay SFH610A-3 is a single-channel, DC-input, transistor-output optocoupler in a through-hole 4-DIP package. It provides 5300Vrms of galvanic isolation, making it a standard choice for breaking ground loops in industrial controls, motor drives, and power supplies where reinforced insulation is required. The -3 CTR grade (100-200% at 10mA) gives you a solid middle ground for drive margin without over-saturating the output side.
Current transfer ratio is the headline parameter that decides LED drive current and output pull-up sizing. At 10mA forward current, the SFH610A-3 guarantees a minimum CTR of 100% and a maximum of 200%. That means with 10mA in, you get at least 10mA of collector current capability on the output transistor (up to 20mA). The -3 grade sits between the -2 (63-125%) and the -4 (160-320%), so if your design needs tighter CTR tolerance or a specific saturation margin, picking the right grade avoids over-driving the LED or starving the output.
Speed and switching: timing for the field
Rise and fall times are both 2µs typical, with turn-on time of 3µs and turn-off of 2.3µs. That puts this part in the general-purpose optocoupler class — fine for 10-100 kHz PWM or logic-level isolation, but not for high-speed serial links. The 70V output breakdown and 50mA continuous output current handle most PLC input modules, relay drivers, and isolated feedback loops in off-line supplies.
Through-hole DIP: serviceable without a rework station
The 4-DIP package (0.300" lead spacing, 7.62mm body width) is socket-friendly and hand-solderable. For a field-service technician, that means you can swap this part on site with basic tools — no hot-air wand, no preheater. The -55°C to 100°C operating range covers most industrial enclosures and outdoor cabinets, though you'll want to keep the LED forward current under 60mA absolute max.
