100 V peak reverse, 3.9 A average — the rectifier stage workhorse
The GBU8B-E3/51: The GBU8B-/51: The Vishay GBU8B-/51 is a single-phase bridge rectifier in the standard GBU through-hole package, rated for 100 V peak reverse voltage and 3.9 A average rectified output current. It converts AC to pulsating DC in power supplies, battery chargers, and motor drive front-ends where the input voltage stays under 70 V RMS (100 V peak). The 1 V forward drop at 8 A surge gives a reasonable conduction loss profile for a 3.9 A continuous-rated part.
The 150°C Tj ceiling also provides headroom for convection-cooled designs where the bridge runs near its rated current in a warm enclosure. Derate the average current above 100°C ambient per the datasheet curve; the 3.9 A rating is at 25°C case temperature.
GBU package — rework and footprint reality
The 4-SIP GBU package has four straight through-hole pins on a 5.08 mm pitch, standard for this power level. The large copper tab on the bottom of the package is the thermal path — it needs a soldered connection to the PCB copper pour or a heatsink clip for full current rating. Hand-rework is straightforward: heat all four pins and the tab simultaneously with a wide soldering iron tip or hot air, lift the part without lifting the pad. The pin 1 corner is chamfered on the package body; orientation is unambiguous.
